Flexion/distraction therapy

A gentle, non-force technique on a specialized table — for disc-related pain, sciatica-type pain, and stubborn stiffness.

What it is

Flexion/distraction therapy, in plain terms

Flexion/distraction is a gentle, hands-on technique performed on a specialized table that slowly and rhythmically flexes and stretches the spine. There are no sudden movements — the motion is slow, controlled, and adjusted to you.

It's often chosen for disc-related pain and for patients who want (or need) a gentler, non-force approach. You stay fully clothed, and your provider explains each step before it happens.

What to expect at your visit

  1. 1
    Exam first

We check whether flexion/distraction is the right fit for what's going on — not every back issue calls for the same tool.

  2. 2
    Gentle table sessions

Slow, rhythmic flexing and stretching on the specialized table, always within your comfort.

  3. 3
    A plan that adapts

Honest progress checks, and adjustments to the plan as your body responds.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

It's gentle by design — most patients describe it as a comfortable stretch, and some find it relaxing. If anything feels wrong, say so and your provider adjusts immediately.

Is this the same as an adjustment?

No — an adjustment is a precise, quick movement; flexion/distraction is slow, rhythmic stretching on a moving table. They're different tools and often work well together.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what's going on. After your exam you'll get an honest recommendation — never a pre-set package.
